“Asteroid Day” is an annual global event which is held on the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event that took place on June 30, 1908, the most harmful known asteroid-related event on Earth in recent history.
We worked with ESA to produce several Asteroid Day programmes in English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, and Italian featuring asteroid experts and special guests discussing European planetary defence and asteroid-related activities.
This was a fast turnaround project, produced when lockdown restrictions were still in place in the UK and Europe. To work around the restrictions, we captured the interviews and moderated discussions for the film using the participant’s web cameras and Skype. The programme was recorded from our associate studio in Berlin. We had three editors working on the film to meet the deadline. The programmes were produced in multiple languages, with subtitles in ten days.
To complete the programmes, we produced a simple 2D asteroid day animation sting for the opening and end titles. In addition, we added captions for names and roles as well as background music. This 2D animation part of the edit was completed in eleven hours.
The programmes were broadcast on ESA TV and uploaded to ESA’s YouTube Channel.
