When the European Space Agency (ESA) prepared to launch its EarthCARE satellite on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in May 2024, they needed a partner who could match the scale and precision of the mission itself.
ESA’s goal was to create a live global broadcast that captured both the technical achievement and the human story behind the launch. The challenge was huge. The event would link multiple ESA facilities including the Operations Center, Astronomy Lab, and Main Stage, as well as ground stations across Australia, Chile, and Africa. Every feed, interview, and visual needed to come together seamlessly.
Without expert coordination, the complexity of this broadcast could have led to interruptions, disjointed storytelling, or lost connections. ESA needed a production partner that understood both the science and the storytelling behind space exploration. Crucially, that partner needed to:
To bring the story to life, World Wide Group provided full video production and live broadcast management in close collaboration with ESA’s in-house teams.
The event was hosted by Matthew Russell from the Astronomy Lab, which served as the broadcast hub. From there, the show linked directly to the Main Stage, where guests could hear from ESA’s Director General, scientists, and mission specialists. Live connections from ground stations in Australia, Chile, and Africa gave the programme a global reach and a true sense of occasion.
Our onsite Production Truck managed more than a dozen live camera feeds, along with all graphics, playback, and audio. Behind the scenes, a specialist team of directors, engineers, camera operators, editors, and producers worked hand in hand with ESA’s communications and mission staff.
The Main Stage environment was designed to reflect the spirit of exploration, complete with large LED displays and atmospheric lighting that immersed audiences in a universe-themed experience.
The ESA EarthCARE launch became one of the most ambitious and visually stunning productions we’ve ever delivered. The coordination between teams, the flawless live links, and the creative presentation came together perfectly on launch day.
For ESA, it was more than just a broadcast. It was a global moment that celebrated innovation, science, and collaboration. For World Wide Group, it was another opportunity to prove how deeply we understand live production in the space and science sectors, and how we turn complex technical challenges into powerful shared experiences.
